art party

Last week saw a gathering of artists at Wally & Bernie's in Manchester. Organized by Tanya of Violet Marsh Photography, it was an opportunity to meet fellow local artists, view portfolios, and encourage each other's work. Everyone is looking forward to the next one, which means it was a great success.

theatre kapow's "How I Learned to Drive" promo photos

I spent Sunday evening working with friends (aka theatre kapow) on their next production, How I Learned to Drive. Besides setting up a studio for individual headshots, a cast photo, and some photos that will be displayed during the actual show (and so can't be posted yet), I photographed some scenes for promotional use (including for an upcoming issue of The Hippo). Nothing is established for the stage yet (including set, props, and lighting), so we created our own with two 500W hot lights I brought. I've only seen bits, but this will prove to be a powerful experience for the audience.

Jamie + Jim's wedding, part 4

We knew that post-ceremony outdoor light would be quickly waning, and that the temperatures would be quite cold, but we ventured out anyway, moving as much as possible while photographing. Jessica held a wireless flash off-camera for some of them, which became increasingly necessary as the sunlight faded.

Jamie + Jim's wedding, part 3

As a graduate of Saint Anselm, Jamie married Jim in the Abbey Church. What was unique, though, was that the ceremony was held in back part of church, in the choir stalls. This is where daily Mass and the Divine Office is said, and photographically it is almost an entirely different church: it's intimate, has stronger lines, and the background is the large (and thus bright) stained glass windows.

Jamie + Jim's wedding, part 2

After Jamie and Jim saw each other for the first time on their wedding day, we went to the Milk Room at the Bedford Village Inn for some portraits.

Sr. Rachel

I visited Sr. Rachel in her apartment to make a portrait for Parable Magazine, where she'll be profiled in an upcoming issue. The weather forced us to remain inside, but we had some wonderful window light and a pleasant conversation.

thursday

Fr. Von

Jessica and I have known Fr. Von long before he became a priest: he and I met briefly during our high school years at a state music festival, and he and Jessica became good friends in college at UNH. We've reconnected since returning to NH, so I was very pleased when I was assigned to make his portrait for Parable Magazine. He's currently the pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Epping, NH.

Julie, fashionista

As I was prepping the set up for the group photo, I asked Julie to model and check the lights (which were triggered wirelessly). They worked, so I didn't make any other test exposures. I initially bypassed this image while editing, but I returned to it later: I like the range of tones, the maroon and tan accents, and the juxtaposition of vertical lines (her) against the horizontal. After cropping, I think it stands well on its own.

Julie

Julie handled the difficult task of coordinating the schedules among the students and me; not only that, but she assisted me in the field by holding reflectors, flashes, etc., and sorting through digital contact sheets. After the last student session, I surreptitiously set up a reflector on a bench in front of her and began photographing. After the shock and laughter subsided, she relaxed.

Seussical

Tonight I photographed Seussical, the current production by Saint Anselm College's Abbey Players. It is a fun, high energy, and fast paced show, suitable for anyone. This weekend will see the final performances; I highly recommend it (and can't wait for my kids to see it tomorrow morning).
