I've known Amy at least since high school, and I photographed her wedding a couple years ago (which I apparently never blogged). She recently became an Independent Stylist for Stella & Dot and needed some new business portraits that showcased both her and the jewelry. She had 5 or 6 outfits (each with accompanying jewelry) in 3 different lighting setups. Above is only one of my favorites.

Jessica & Kevin are fellow alumni of Saint Anselm College, where they met running cross country, and they were returning to campus for an alumni race the following day. It was most fitting, then, that we return to those trails on campus for some engagement portraits. The fall weather and light was perfect, and we ended the day with some photographs that will serve as their save-the-date cards (those are a surprise--not posted here).

Our session was relaxed and pleasant, and we discussed life after school, reading the great books, and their upcoming wedding. I'm excited to share their wedding day with them next summer.

I'll spare us all a virtual mea culpa simply by stating that the year has been filled with many changes, not the least being photographic, including new formats and media. Most notably, nearly of all of my personal work is now created on film.

When my brother and his son visited over the summer, we enjoyed a boys' night out (including our dad) at Holman Stadium to see the Nashua Silver Knights, a summer-league baseball team. Besides being a great night for baseball, the venue was perfect for my Canon P rangefinder and a roll of TriX.

In May, I went to Houston, Texas to photograph a friend's wedding. The entire wedding day was held at the University of Saint Thomas. Now I lived for five years in Houston, and most of it was spent on this campus, but I hadn't photographed there professionally. The campus was designed by famed architect Philip Johnson and is noted for its strong, simple lines and Chapel of St. Basil (more coming on that).

We visited the Hooksett Farmer's Market a few weeks ago, and I made a some photos while visiting vendors and watching the kids.

This photo is a scan from a negative out of a Canon P rangefinder. The camera is fully manual (focus, exposure, no meter), and I'm overall pleased with the results. I'll be posting more from this camera soon.

I brought my two older children to Double Midnight Comics last weekend for the store's 8th anniversary. While they checked things out, I wandered around. The little guy below was testing his knowledge of the Lost cast (part of Jason Casey's work) with his dad. It's rare that the various elements of a photograph come together so well.

The Pond

Last fall, I had the opportunity to work with my friend Dan Hannon on his first directing project, The Pond (which he also wrote). It was filmed in NH, with talent and production teams coming from all over. Seeing a movie production from the inside was a great experience. Despite being a smaller (20 min) movie, the amount of planning and work was impressive. I was on site for just one day, but I met and worked closely with many involved, including two of the leads, Alicia Witt and Todd Rotondi.

I won't mention any plot elements here, but my task was to create a set of photographs of the couple, including some wedding portraits and candids, vacation photos, and a random bar shot. (The last photo includes Dan in the background.) Alas, the scenes in which these would be used were cut--although the final scene shows one photo (not posted here).

The movie is debuting at the Palm Springs International Short Film Festival and Film Market. I received my copy last week, and it's very impressive. Congratulations to all those who worked on making this a reality, and good luck at the festival.

I've been very grateful for my continued relationship with theatre kapow, a NH-based theatre company who just completed their second season. I was editing some work for them and found these from a post-show reception of Alone, which was adapted from Poe's works for the stage by Brian Kennedy (first photo). Nearly the entire ensemble is shown below. (The baby wasn't in the show--that's Anna, who wasn't yet 2 months old at the time, being held by tkapow's Carey Cahoon.)

I've never been an outgoing person. Even as a young child, I remember observing others rather than doing whatever myself (it wasn't as pathetic as it sounds--at least I don't think). This isn't a trait I've fought, and so it continues today. Now, though, I have a camera in my hands, so when my friend and fellow photographer Tanya hosted a small party recently, I made a series of photographs.

Of course, a smaller camera helps, too. While I use an SLR for my professional work, carrying one around for everyday use (and especially going anywhere with my children) was becoming too difficult. So last fall I invested in an Epson RD-1, which is a digital rangefinder (manual focus and exposure), and it hasn't left my side since. It's quite inconspicuous, allowing me to make photographs quickly and unobtrusively.

My wedding portfolio has now been fully updated. While it's common to add or a delete a few throughout the year, this was a major overhaul, highlighting much of my work from 2009. Thank you to all of the brides and grooms who asked me to witness and make art on their wedding day.

The photographs found there are the product of a documentary technique to photography. As much as I enjoy the wedding celebration, I never consider myself a guest but rather an observer with a camera. While always inclined to that approach, in 2009 it became a conscious goal and better integrated throughout the wedding day. I hope the portfolio reflects that.

I've written this post dozens of times in my head over the past few months. My last post was just a couple weeks prior to a new arrival, in the midst of the year's busiest time for weddings (fall for me), and the beginning of a new school year. Needless to say, through the end of 2009 was one the busiest times of my life, and 2010 so far as been finishing projects from 2009 and simply recovering.

I've not been photographically idle--the opposite, in fact, to the point that I have little time to post new work. Among other things, I've spent significant time on assignments for Parable Magazine and developing some new studio projects. I hope to begin (again) sharing some highlights of recent and new work as I settle in to a more regular schedule.

To those who have been inquiring about my blog, thanks for your patience and continued support. To new readers, thanks for being here.

A recent wedding reception was held at Scullers--one of my favorite places in Boston. I've heard some great performances there (most notably the late Joe Williams, where we had front row seats--right behind his pianist Norman Simmons). This was my first opportunity to photograph there, so while dinner was being served, I spent some time observing and photographing DJ Cheeks and his assistant. I'm very pleased with the results. My brother-in-law, Josh, is an active tennis player, but I rarely (ever?) have the opportunity to see him play. Last weekend, he had advanced in the Dana Ball "Love" Tennis Tournament, which supports cancer research, so we took the kids to watch him play. I've photographed Emily on stage a few times, so we were both excited to have a studio session. Just as expected, it was comfortable and collaborative. I even managed to persuade she and her boyfriend Seath (also an actor) to have a quick portrait together outside (the one below via the Lensbaby).

This job came about very quickly last month through a friend's referral. The assignment was to provide the photography for School Band and Orchestra magazine's feature article on Andy Soucy, music director at Londonderry (NH) High School. Both Andy and I were pleasantly surprised (almost shocked) by this--I graduated from LHS and benefited greatly from the music program, which has only grown over the years.

Spending time at the school was a bit surreal, of course, but the return was made easier by seeing some former teachers (who remembered me!). I photographed one of Andy's bands in rehearsal and later some portraits. The photographs chosen for the cover and the article are mine, except the ones of the marching band in action.

Every part of this experience has been great, thanks to Andy and the staff of SBO.

Inti Soccer Academy

The Inti Soccer Academy was established this year in part by some close friends. As stated in their mission, they seek "to serve the disadvantaged youth of Manchester, NH, by establishing an intensive and rigorous soccer academy, with supporting educational services, within the most distressed region of the inner city."

The inaugural camp began on Monday, and they asked me to make some photographs for the Academy. Despite the rain, about 50 young soccer players were divided into three age groups, practiced various drills, and were in good spirits.

The Chapel Art Center holds an annual luncheon to thank donors and provide an opportunity for visiting and viewing some wonderful work. It's a great environment for photography. Some notables: the first photo is of the director, Iain MacLellan, O.S.B., looking over his notes prior to the guests arriving. The final photo is of Sylvia Nicolas, a world-renowned sculptor and stained-glass artist who has a special relationship with the Center.

Saint Anselm College held its annual golf tournament (to raise money for scholarships) at the Portsmouth Country Club. theatre kapow's latest production, How I Learned to Drive--previewed earlier--will be performed this weekend. As usual, it has high dramatic and production values and showcases some new actors (to this company, at least). Learn more about it and, better yet, attend a show.

A photographic note: I usually will balance the color of the light to be the same throughout a show; here, though, most of the stage lighting was quite warm, except for a few scenes. I've decided to retain the original qualities of color as much as possible (eg, the red table scenes).

I spent Sunday evening working with friends (aka theatre kapow) on their next production, How I Learned to Drive. Besides setting up a studio for individual headshots, a cast photo, and some photos that will be displayed during the actual show (and so can't be posted yet), I photographed some scenes for promotional use (including for an upcoming issue of The Hippo). Nothing is established for the stage yet (including set, props, and lighting), so we created our own with two 500W hot lights I brought. I've only seen bits, but this will prove to be a powerful experience for the audience.

As a graduate of Saint Anselm, Jamie married Jim in the Abbey Church. What was unique, though, was that the ceremony was held in back part of church, in the choir stalls. This is where daily Mass and the Divine Office is said, and photographically it is almost an entirely different church: it's intimate, has stronger lines, and the background is the large (and thus bright) stained glass windows.

As I was prepping the set up for the group photo, I asked Julie to model and check the lights (which were triggered wirelessly). They worked, so I didn't make any other test exposures. I initially bypassed this image while editing, but I returned to it later: I like the range of tones, the maroon and tan accents, and the juxtaposition of vertical lines (her) against the horizontal. After cropping, I think it stands well on its own.

Julie handled the difficult task of coordinating the schedules among the students and me; not only that, but she assisted me in the field by holding reflectors, flashes, etc., and sorting through digital contact sheets. After the last student session, I surreptitiously set up a reflector on a bench in front of her and began photographing. After the shock and laughter subsided, she relaxed.

I was invited to be the sole photographer at this event hosted by The Brass Heart Inn last weekend. A few others vendors and I were at the Inn all day, meeting and chatting with couples and each other. It was a great event: we were treated to some wonderful food, not even considering the bakers who brought their wares. I was very glad to have met Linda and Rebecca from Linda's Flowers and Gifts in Wolfeboro, as well as videographer Meg Simone from Intervale.

The reception was held The Coastal House in Wells, Maine. For me, it was great to see so many friends there, but more on that tomorrow.

Dave and I were friends at Saint Anselm, and he graduated from a couple years before I did. I saw him and met Jen last spring while we were in Albany for another friend's first Mass in his home parish as a priest. We chatted, and they still needed a photographer for their wedding. It was pure serendipity, and we were all excited and grateful.

A few more from the reception. Late in the evening, and despite the severe winter temperatures, Erin and David wanted some outdoor portraits, so out we went.

A technical note: knowing that winter weddings in NH do not have much light, I rented Canon's 5DII from Glass and Gear. The low light performance was stunning: I spent most of the day at ISO 6400, and the noise levels were beyond acceptable. I wouldn't have been able to make many of the photos with lesser cameras.

It wasn't until a few weeks prior to the wedding that Erin divulged that she was marrying this David at the Bedford Village Inn. My nerves were a bit on edge--if only because he looks quite mean in his player photo--but were immediately put to rest upon meeting him and his friends.

Anyway, family and friends came from all over the country (I think I was only one from NH) to celebrate their marriage, and it was a wonderful evening. Everyone was very relaxed and happy to see Erin and David enter a new phase of their lives together. Here are a few of my favorite photographs from the preparations:
