Lauren Karjala, 2012.

I met Lauren a few years ago through her family (her father is a photographer). I was beginning to actively photograph artists in their studios, so I asked to visit her. At that time, she was living and working in the basement of her grandmother's condo, which had been transformed by her figure paintings, drawings, and sketches of all sizes.

Towards the end of our visit, I realized that, during our conversations, she had been sketching me. Before we parted, she wiped it away.

Lauren's senior exhibit opens at the University of New Hampshire's Museum of Art on Friday.

Last year, producer Joe Deleault invited me into the recording studio to photograph Andrew Sterling as he finished his album. We spent a few hours in Jim Prendergast's Mill Pond Music Studio in Portsmouth, NH, reviewing previous results, recording a few more tracks, and watching Andrew and Jim work. The environment was relaxed yet technically precise, and everyone ended the day pleased with the results.

March for Life: Mass II

As mentioned in yesterday's post, a Mass is said at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception the night before the March for Life. The Mass is televised throughout the side and lower chapels, where many have camped for hours just to claim a space.

The night before the March for Life, a Mass is said at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Despite the basilica's tremendous size, it fills beyond capacity hours prior to the Mass, as the faithful hope to secure a place in a pew. But many must stay in the aisles and side chapels.

Individuals and groups travel from around the country to attend the March for Life. Chartered buses are quite common, lining the streets throughout the city. The members of this group, just disembarked, were from Massachusetts.

The day prior to the March for Life is a morning protest before a Planned Parenthood clinic in the city. The protesters extended their reach to the sidewalk across the street.

Nellie Gray, founder of the March for Life, died in August 2012, so the 2013 March was the first not led by her. Pictured above is the memorial to her (coat, scarf, and hat) in the convention center.

Addison turned one, and her parents celebrated with a portrait session. Towards the end, she needed a distraction, and I had already finished with my Bronica.

These two are a wonderful couple marrying this fall.  We spent some time together in their hometown while Alex was on leave (he serves in the US Coast Guard) to make some portraits.

Loretta & I attended college together but only recently reconnected. I made this portrait at the end of a summer day, after our families had spent the day together. She was eight months at the time; she's since had the baby (a girl), who'll have her first photo session soon.
